Well, I AM the fic realms reporter, aren't I? I need to report or else lose my job, so this time, I'm going to score video games I've played.
First game.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Platform: Nintendo DS
Producer: Nintendo
Ah yes, the esteemed Zelda series strikes again with it's newest title, Phantom Hourglass. I'm going to say it now and have it said: This game is the TOP reason to dig into your savings and buy a DS.
(P.S. There's a limited edition Zelda D.S. that comes including the game. Only $160 at a walmart near you.)
The Zelda franchise has an ongoing pattern. There's an evil villain bent on world domination or something of the sort, who causes problems for the main protagonist, Link. As Link, you traverse the world, gaining experience and finding items that you'll have to use to further the game. As you progress, more of the storyline is revealed, and your goal shifts.
Every Zelda game adds something new to the franchise, and every game is unique in storyline, characters, and setting.
In Phantom Hourglass, the setting is a wide spread ocean in which you must traverse to accomplish your goal, finding uncharted islands and solving the riddles of the many islands in order to accomplish your goal.
Part of your goal is finding artifacts that hold great power in order to defeat the antagonist. This part can become quite tedious, and is what the majority of the game is spent doing, other than the countless dungeons, and the slaughtering of hundreds of enemies.
This game takes all of those things and adds to it a map you can make marks on, a ship you have to navigate across four sections of the vast sea, and a completely touch controlled world. You draw the path for a boomerang, you make a tightrope using a grapple hook, and you set the course for a moving bomb, just to name a few.
However, this entirely touch controlled game has it's drawbacks. I've found that while playing the game, my hand holding the stylus often blocks out the screen, and makes it hard for me to see what I'm doing. In moments of action, this can cause a problem. Also, the touch controls can take a while to get used to, and can prove difficult, especially in the beginning, regardless of how DS experienced you are.
Though it has these quirks, this game is one of the best in the series, even if it IS a little short. It isn't the storyline that sets this gem apart though. It's how FUN it is to play, even with the problems the controls present at first.
All in all, I'd say this one gets a
9... out of ten.
